Fuchsite, Muscabite
Fuchsite / Muscovite — Minerals in the Mica Family

Muscovite is a mineral in the mica family, characterised by its layered structure and ability to split into thin sheets. Fuchsite is a green variety of muscovite in which chromium replaces some aluminium in the mineral structure, giving it its colour.
Mineralogical Properties
| Property | Information |
|---|---|
| Mineral | Muscovite; fuchsite is a chromium-bearing variety |
| Mineral group | Mica — sheet silicates |
| Main composition | Potassium aluminium silicate; fuchsite also contains chromium |
| Ideal muscovite formula | KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂ |
| Representative fuchsite formula | K(Al,Cr)₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂ |
| Colour | Muscovite: colourless or various shades; fuchsite: green |
| Hardness | Low and dependent on testing direction; fuchsite is commonly around 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale |
| Muscovite refractive indices | Approximately 1.552–1.618, depending on composition and optical direction |
| Specific gravity | Muscovite: approximately 2.77–2.88; fuchsite: around 2.8–2.9 |
| Crystal system | Monoclinic |
| Cleavage | Perfect in one direction, producing thin sheets |
These are reference values for the minerals. A specimen containing additional minerals does not necessarily display the same values.
Layered Structure and Lustre
Muscovite’s structure allows it to separate into thin, flexible and elastic sheets. Their surfaces reflect light and produce a lustre that may appear vitreous, pearly or silky.
In specimens made up of small sheets, changing the lighting angle can highlight reflections from different areas.
Identification and the Relationship between the Minerals
Fuchsite and muscovite are not entirely separate minerals: fuchsite is a variety of muscovite. Green colour alone is insufficient for identification; the layered structure, cleavage and other properties of the specimen are also examined.
Sources Around the World
Fuchsite is known from India, among other places. Muscovite is more widespread and is known from Brazil, India, Russia and the United States. General muscovite sources should be distinguished from those of the chromium-bearing green variety.
Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning — Beliefs and Traditions
Fuchsite is the best-known type of green mica.
Its energy is gentle and enables connection to high dimensions. It strengthens the connection between man and nature.
Fuchsite helps strengthen compassion in emotionally rigid people. It is a soothing stone, suitable for aid in recovery from trauma. It helps connect one with his inner child, with the mischief and vitality that many adults lack.
This is a stone for preventive medicine, good for maintaining the immune system.
These meanings belong to the realm of belief and symbolism. They can give jewellery personal significance, but they are not proven gemological properties or a promise of healing, protection or a change in health.
