Prasiolite is a gemstone belonging to the quartz family, with a green colour that may be pale, yellowish or greyish. In transparent stones, its delicate colour combines with the appearance of light within the gem.
It belongs to the same mineral as amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz, but differs in colour.

Colour Origin and Treatments
Naturally green quartz exists, but is rare. Prasiolite can be produced by heating certain types of amethyst. Not every amethyst turns green when heated, and treatments combining irradiation and heating to produce green quartz are also known.
Quartz formed in nature and subsequently treated is a treated natural stone. Identifying the material as natural quartz does not establish that its colour is natural too. Known treatments should be disclosed, and claims about colour origin should have an appropriate basis.
Quality and Cutting
When choosing prasiolite, we examine colour, transparency, inclusions, fractures and polish quality. For particularly pale colours, viewing the stone against different backgrounds and under changing lighting helps show how it will appear in jewellery.
Weight alone does not determine appearance: proportions and cutting also influence how light appears within the stone.

Quartz hardness helps resist scratches but does not prevent breakage from impact. Setting design should consider the edges, fractures and how the jewellery will be worn.
For gentle cleaning at home, use lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Professional cleaning should suit the stone’s condition, known treatments and jewellery structure.
