Sunstone

Sunstone — Warm Colour and Natural Sparkle

Sunstone

Sunstone is a feldspar gemstone found in a variety of colours and appearances. Some stones show small flashes as they turn in the light; others attract attention primarily through their colour and transparency.

The name sunstone does not refer to a single mineral composition. It is used for varieties of orthoclase and plagioclase, including oligoclase and labradorite. Gemological properties therefore vary with the mineral.

These values refer to the different minerals sold as sunstone, rather than measurements of an individual stone.

Where Does the Sparkle Come From?

Flat, reflective inclusions create an effect called aventurescence. They may consist of hematite, copper or other minerals. Their size and orientation influence the reflections, from a subtle sheen to distinct flashes. Not every sunstone displays this phenomenon.

Quality, Cutting and Price

When choosing a stone, we examine colour, transparency, inclusions, material integrity and polish quality. When sparkle is present, viewing its changes in motion is important. Stones of the same weight can differ considerably in appearance and value.

Treatments and Identification

Attractive colour and sparkle are insufficient to identify a stone or establish its treatment status. Copper diffusion treatments to change colour are known in certain feldspars, making examination and disclosure of known treatments important. The existence of a treatment does not mean that an individual stone has undergone it.

Setting and Care

Sunstone can be incorporated into pendants, earrings and rings. Because of its cleavage, setting design should consider impact and how the jewellery will be worn.

Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaning.

Sources Around the World

Oregon in the United States is known for copper-bearing sunstone. Sunstone is also known from India. The name applies to different feldspar materials, so the identity of the individual material also matters.

Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning — Beliefs and Traditions

Sometimes referred to as "Aventurine Feldspar," some also call this stone the "leadership stone."

Sunstone helps eliminate one’s fears and anxieties and lowers levels of tension and stress.

It is excellent for people in leadership roles, as using it reinforces the qualities needed by a leader: compassion, thinking big, taking responsibility and setting an example for others.

Sunstone balances the stomach area and helps treat ulcers. It is good for use in dealing with cartilage problems, and excellent for use among athletes and dancers.

These meanings belong to the realm of belief and symbolism. They can give jewellery personal significance, but they are not proven gemological properties or a promise of healing, protection or a change in health.

Sunstone in Personal Jewellery

At TzurGems Jewelry & Gemstones, we examine the stone and create a design that highlights its colour and play of light. Guy’s gemological knowledge and Rafael’s craftsmanship allow us to tailor the jewellery to both the stone and the person who will wear it.
