Ametrine — Two Colours in One Crystal

Three purple and golden ametrines in different cuts

Ametrine is a member of the quartz family that combines the purple of amethyst with the yellow to orange of citrine in the same crystal. Its name combines the names of these two gems, and its bicoloured appearance is its hallmark.

It is a single crystal with different colour zones, rather than two separate stones joined together. Cutting can emphasise a clear boundary between the colours or create a more gradual visual blend through internal light reflections.

What Creates the Two Colours?

Ametrine’s colours are associated with iron and different colour centres in the quartz structure. Differences between zones in the crystal allow the purple associated with amethyst and the yellow-orange associated with citrine to occur together.

Cutting and the Meeting of Colours

A rectangular step cut can display the colours side by side, sometimes in an approximately half-and-half division. Other cuts can blend their reflections and create an appearance that changes with the viewing angle.

No single arrangement suits every crystal. The cutter chooses the orientation according to the position of the colour zones, the shape of the rough and the intended result.

What Influences Quality and Price?

The contrast between purple and yellow-orange, colour saturation, clarity and cutting quality affect the stone’s appearance and value. An attractive colour distribution can be distinct and balanced or incorporated into a creative cut that emphasises the meeting of the colours.

Weight alone does not determine quality: the way the colours appear together in the finished gem also matters.

Sources Around the World

The Anahi mine in eastern Bolivia, near the Brazilian border, is the recognised commercial source of natural ametrine. Small, non-commercial occurrences have also been found elsewhere in the world.

The mine also produces amethyst and citrine. The place where a stone was mined should be distinguished from where it was cut, polished or sold.

Natural and Synthetic Ametrine

Synthetic ametrine is also available, grown in a laboratory using the hydrothermal method. It is laboratory-grown quartz rather than a glass imitation.

A combination of purple and yellow alone is insufficient to establish natural origin. Identification may rely on inclusions, growth patterns and colour zoning, and sometimes requires advanced laboratory examination.

Cleaning and Care

Clean with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid steam cleaning, heat and abrupt temperature changes.

Prolonged exposure to intense light can cause fading in some stones. Store the jewellery separately from pieces that could scratch it and protect it from impacts during wear.

Spiritual Meaning

Ametrine is associated with a combination of mental clarity, creativity and inner listening. The meeting of its two colours symbolises a connection between reflection and the will to act, and between inspiration and the ability to turn an idea into a practical step.

In this spirit, it is also associated with decisiveness, focus and personal confidence. It can serve as a reminder to examine habits that no longer serve us, choose a direction consciously and persevere. Its combination of colours symbolises making room for different aspects of personality and acting from them in harmony.

These meanings belong to the realm of belief and symbolism. They can give jewellery personal significance, but they are not proven gemological properties or a promise of healing, protection or a change in health.
