Clear Quartz / Rock Crystal — Transparency and Natural Structure

Polished clear quartz and a rough crystal

Clear quartz is the colourless variety of quartz, also known as rock crystal. It belongs to the same mineral as amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz.

It can be found as rough crystals, polished gemstones or material containing natural inclusions. Its transparency reveals the depth of the stone and the details within it.

Transparency and Inclusions

The term clear quartz does not guarantee a stone free of inclusions. Clear quartz may contain other minerals, cavities with liquids and gases, or signs of its growth processes.

Inclusions can add interest and character, and sometimes provide information about formation. However, fractures and certain inclusions may affect durability and working options.

Natural Quartz, Synthetic Quartz and Imitations

Synthetic quartz, grown in a laboratory, also exists. Natural and synthetic quartz may look very similar and share similar properties, so high transparency or the presence of inclusions alone is insufficient to establish origin.

Professional identification examines internal structure and gemological properties, and may require further testing.

Quality and Cutting

When choosing clear quartz, we examine transparency, inclusions, fractures and polish quality. In a polished stone, we also consider proportions and the appearance of light within it.

For a rough crystal, we consider its natural shape, the integrity of its edges and how it can be incorporated into a design.

Setting and Care

A hardness of 7 helps resist scratches but does not prevent breakage from impact. Setting design should consider the stone’s condition and protect exposed edges.

For gentle cleaning at home, use lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Professional cleaning should suit the stone’s condition and jewellery structure.

Sources Around the World

Brazil is a familiar source of clear quartz crystals and cut stones. Quartz is also known from Mexico and many other locations. Transparency and size alone do not establish geographical origin.

Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning — Beliefs and Traditions

Some think that the diamond referred to as one of the stones of the High Priest's Breastplate in the Bible, is actually crystal quartz. It is also mentioned in ancient cultures such as Atlantis and Lemuria, Tibetan culture, ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, Aboriginal and Mayan.

Crystal quartz is an excellent companion for spiritual development. It stimulates and strengthens the body's energy, and provides support and reinforcement in situations of emotional instability. It can also positively affect animals and plants.

It strengthens the body, the mind, and the immune system.

These meanings belong to the realm of belief and symbolism. They can give jewellery personal significance, but they are not proven gemological properties or a promise of healing, protection or a change in health.

Clear Quartz in Personal Jewellery

At TzurGems, we examine the stone and plan a design that gives its transparency, inclusions and shape room to be seen. Guy’s gemological knowledge and Rafael’s craftsmanship come together to create personal jewellery, from a single stone to combinations with coloured gemstones.
